Dermal fillers are soft tissue fillers used at various depths in the skin used to:

Hyaluronic acid: Hyaluronic acid is found naturally through out the body, with the highest concentrations in the joints, eyes, and skin. In the skin hyaluronic acid attracts water, which allows the skin to become more hydrated. Most of the results can last 6 to 18 months.

Calcium hydroxylapatite is also a naturally occurring substance, found primarily in our bones. It may last longer and is typically thicker than that of many hyaluronic acid fillers. Calcium hydroxylapatite is also reported to help stimulate natural collagen production, and it is typically used to create structure and framework for deeper lines and wrinkles. Most of the results can last 12 months.

Poly-L-lactic acid is biodegradable synthetic substance. It can be normally found in dissolvable stitches. Poly-L-lactic acid helps to stimulate natural collagen production, and is used to create structure and framework for deeper lines and wrinkles. The actual filler gel dissipates after a few days. Most of the results can last more than 2 years.

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) is a synthetic, biocompatible substance. It is injected as a “microsphere” or tiny ball beneath the skin and remains indefinitely to provide continued structure. PMMA fillers will also contain collagen, a naturally occurring substance in the skin that provides structure and firmness. Most of the results can last up to 5 years.

Fat grafting or autologous fat injections requires surgery as your own fat is harvested from another area of your body typically using liposuction. The fat is then purified and injected into the area of interest. It should hould only be performed by an experienced board certified surgeon who has had specialized training. Most of the results can last more than 5 years.

During the procedure, a syringe containing the filler substance is injected using a needle or cannula and sculpted into the area of concern. A topical anesthetic can be used if needed.
